Big product recalls by both Toyota and Honda

Read the related stories from this week's New York Times. This one is about Toyota's recall of vehicles in which gas pedals stick, and also notes its accompanying freeze on production and sales of the 8 models affected. Nine million cars worldwide are affected by the Toyota recall. Here's a short excerpt from the story that speaks to a "remedy"--referring to what Toyota plans to offer car owners, not to legal remedies.

On its Web site, Toyota said there would be “rapid deployment” of a remedy but did not go into detail. * * *

The pedal manufacturer, the CTS Corporation in Elkhart, Ind., has begun shipping replacement pedals to be installed at Toyota plants.

And here's an interesting quote from a Toyota official suggesting that the car maker is responsible for the problem, even if CTS delivered a defective component part to Toyota.

“I don’t want to get into any kind of a disagreement with CTS. Our position on suppliers has always been that Toyota is responsible for the cars.”

Here's a brief excerpt from the story about Honda's recall. This one references more prominently the accidents that have been linked to the fault that has prompted the recall:

Honda Motor recalled 646,000 of its Fit, Jazz and City automobiles globally because of a faulty window switch after a child died when fire broke out in a car last year.
