By a vote of 74-0, the California Assembly approved a new Good Samaritan bill that would expand protection for rescuers. The bill was proposed in response to a recent California Supreme Court ruling that gave the current statute a limited interpretation. In that case, a woman was paralyzed after her friend pulled her from a wrecked car because she feared it was about to explode. The Court said the current statute only applied to the administration of medical care. The proposed law would cover all rescue activities, but would allow victims to sue where there is gross negligence or willful misconduct.
