Food sources untraceable

Despite federal rules requiring food manufacturers and distributors to be able to identify the suppliers and recipients of their products, most cannot. Indeed, according to a New York Times report, a quarter of them didn't even know they were required to be able to trace their suppliers. The problem came to light as a result of the salmonella scare from peanuts that has made nearly 700 people sick and been linked to nine deaths. Obviously, the ability to issue effective recalls depends on the ability to track products through the production and distribution process.
